Developer Playground Games has a solid track record when it comes to optimizing their games, and the latest installment of Forza Horizon is no exception. As expected, there are differences in graphics and performance between platforms with the PC version running at maximum settings on NVIDIA RTX 3080. Interestingly, however, the Xbox Series X matches the highest PC settings in game quality mode (4K @ 30 frames per second). Series X also supports a performance mode that runs the game in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second - this mode reduces the quality of reflections, external shading, texturing of shadows and vegetation to maintain a stable frame rate.

I usually prefer the performance mode, 60fps is important in my eyes . To give choices is always very nice, something that Crystal Dynamics have supported since Xbox One X was revealed and the new Tomb Raider games play great at 30fps. Anyway, I'm still curious to see the quality mode of Forza Horizon 5 on Series X and being blown away by my LG C9 but I'll probably switch to performance mode after a little while. Forza Horizon 5 will likely be the best racing game of the whole generation. Developer Playground Games has quite the track record when it comes to optimizing its games, and the latest Forza Horizon installment is no exception. As expected, there are graphical and performance differences between the platforms with the PC version running the game on maximum settings on an NVIDIA RTX 3080.

Interestingly, however, is that the Xbox Series X matches the highest PC settings in the game's quality mode (). The Series X also supports a performance mode that runs the game in 4K resolution at 60FPS – this mode decreases the quality of reflections, ambient occlusion, shadows texturing, and vegetation in order to maintain a steady framerate. In order to replicate the Xbox Series X quality graphics mode on PC, gamers should at least have an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super. But in order to enjoy the PC's biggest advantage, higher frame rates, a more powerful gaming PC is required. With reduced settings equivalent to the Xbox Series X performance mode, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super was not entirely able to hold a steady 60 fps at 4k resolution.

PC gamers who would like to play Forza Horizon 5 on these settings should have at least anRTX 2080. Considering the game is still built around the Xbox One consoles, it stands to reason then that the game doesn't use the CPU as heavily. Memory usage also rarely exceeded over 12GB, being well under spec for the Xbox One X console, which runs the game at 30fps at a maximum resolution of 4K. Playground Games has confirmed that the game will get a patch for increasing the resolution to 1440p on the Xbox Series S at launch, which currently renders the game at 1080p.

By the time the game launches, the Xbox Series S version of the game will run offer a 1440p/30fps 'Quality' mode and a 1080p/60fps performance mode. In my testing the game can easily run at 60fps at 1440p on my RTX 2060 Super, and that's at native resolution with higher graphical settings. At 4K, I have to turn a few settings down to get 60fps but even then a native 4K 60fps performance is quite possible. Interestingly, however, is that the Xbox Series X matches the highest PC settings in the game's quality mode (4K@30FPS).

Turn 10 has confirmed that the game will get a patch for increasing the resolution to 1440p on the Xbox Series S at launch, which currently renders the game at 1080p. However, the lack of a 60fps option on the Xbox Series S is quite baffling considering the increased CPU power of the machine over last gen consoles. Hopefully Series S owners will get a 60fps mode after launch.

In my tests I found that – in general – there are three levels of graphics fidelity on consoles. Xbox One is at the base, as you might expect, but it still manages to get the job done. The Xbox One X Dynamic 4K graphical profile is broadly equivalent to the Xbox Series machines in its 60fps modes – but each version has its own pluses and minuses. In some areas, the Series X performance mode seemed to provide better detail compared to Xbox One X. In others, the Series S textures didn't look as detailed as Xbox One X's (and the resolution is lower, 810p dynamics -1080p). The Series X's performance mode matches the One X's DRS Plus 1600p-2160p profile – however, I want to point out again that resolution changes are difficult to follow with the naked eye. It's also impossible to find any drops from the target at 60fps in Xbox Series console performance modes.

Some will prefer the expanded frame rate and see that as a necessary trade-off, but we have to say that the 30fps quality mode still plays very well indeed and you get the maximum visual effect, to boot. In my tests, I found that – generally speaking – there are three levels of graphics fidelity on the consoles. The Xbox One is at the bottom of the pile, as you might expect, but still gets the job done. Xbox One X's dynamic 4K graphics profile is broadly similar to the series machines in their 60fps modes – but each version has its own pluses and minuses.

Series X performance mode matches One X's 1600p-2160p DRS Plus profile – however, I want to emphasize again that resolution changes are hard to track with the eye. It's also almost impossible to find any drop from the 60fps target in the Series console's performance modes. Ultimately, Playground has delivered an excellent game for all Xbox systems. The surprise package for me was the Xbox One X – detail level pop-in and longer loading are stains, but maybe that's only because these areas of the game are so dramatically improved on the series' hardware.

Graphically, it's a treat, and Scorpio Engine continues to amaze in its ability to service a 4K display. Judging on its own merits, it is a good version of the game and a worthy successor. The fact that it retains Forza's signature 1080p 4x MSAA image quality and a consistent 30fps helps tremendously to mitigate some of the clearer cuts – it adds tremendously to the overall polishing. Quality mode looks great, performance mode is locked at 60 fps, and for those still playing on 1080p screens, I can not foresee any complaints. Crucially, there are benefits to playing Forza Horizon 5 on Series consoles, which are not just about graphics or frame rate. Hosting the game on SSD provides a more streamlined experience on Series consoles – and it's noticeable right from the start of the experience.

The intro drive is a playground, a spectacular preview of the upcoming action. It's a glorious, seamless, load-free experience on Xbox Series machines, but Xbox One consoles simply can't deliver data for each new step on time, leading to second pauses from one segment to the next. It looks a lot, but the charging delays interrupt the flow and do not leave the best impression.

Although these transitions are actually instantaneous on the new consoles, there is still loading in the main game, but it is much faster than last generation console equivalents – about 3x for the better in my tests. In one of several extensive videos featuring Forza Horizon 5, Digital Foundry concluded that the quality mode on Xbox Series X mostly matches the maxed out settings on PC. But at a native 4k resolution, the Xbox Series X only manages to output 30 fps with these settings. Therefore it looks like the PC settings in Forza Horizon 5 do not provide a lot of headroom when it comes to visual quality, also because raytracing is only active in photo mode and can't be activated for regular gameplay.

There are two ways to improve framerates at 4K – either buy a faster, more expensive GPU or turn the settings down. For the former, the RTX 3060 and above have accomplished 60 fps, while you'd need a minimum of an RX 6800 if you use extreme presets to get the best framerate. If you're lucky, you'll find one, though, as it's still a huge hit. We tested with a few GPUs this round, though we'd be interested in seeing others add to the charts, please let me know in the comments. If you can interpolate performance for most of the missing GPUs based on what we've provided, you should be able to, however, some AMD GPUs that lack a 6GB RAM might need a driver update before they are expected.

Moreover, the results do correlate well with the GPU benchmark hierarchy. The 3090 XT tops the coveted top honor, followed by the 6900 XT. Nvidia's RTX 3070 Ti translates to above the RX 6800, proving that the game can run with only 8GB of RAM.

With again, this is a successful run that we saw twenty feet at the highest 4K extreme. To keep the pace of thirty o'clock, even an old GTX 1080 may suffice, but an alternative option would be less advisable. Forza Horizon 5 is the latest and greatest installment of the playground game, and we're going to Mexico. Since its three years ago we used the previous game to test our GPU benchmarks, therefore it is time to find out how things haven't changed since… We got the review code early. There are a few minor problems to try and fix, so it's more a preview of performance than an obvious answer. But let's start driving the testing with some of the best graphics cards.

You could think the advent of new devices and technologies would make one of the biggest changes. The next game came out right after Nvidia's launch of the RTX 20-series GPUs, and it wasn't trying to combine that tech. It's also nigh-on impossible to find any drops from the target 60fps in the Series console performance modes. During the Microsoft Xbox E event, the company showed off Forza Horizon 4. It's the latest in the long-running open-world racing series and it's the first game to be set in Britain.

Forza Horizon 4's release date is October 2 for the Xbox One family of consoles and Windows 10 PC. With the game being playable at E3, Microsoft put up a substantial amount of information pertaining to the game such as its modes and how the Seasons feature works. It also snuck in the game's frame rate and resolution for the Xbox One X - Microsoft's most powerful console ever. Suffice to say, if you were expecting an improvement over last year's Forza Horizon 3 with 4K gameplay at 60fps, think again. The surprise for me was the Xbox One X – pop-in detail level and longer loading are minor blemishes, but maybe that's just because these areas of the game are so dramatically improved on the Xbox Series hardware.

Graphically, it's a pleasure, and the Scorpio Engine continues to amaze in its ability to maintain a 4K display. Judged on its own merits, it's a good version of the game and a worthy sequel. Maintaining Forza's signature 1080p 4x MSAA image quality and 30fps consistency helps immensely to mitigate some of the more obvious cuts – it adds immensely to the overall polish. Quality mode looks excellent, performance mode is locked at 60fps and for those who still play on 1080p screens, I don't foresee any complaints. Ray tracing quality – This only affects whether car models in the Forza Vista viewing mode use ray-traced reflections, or the standard cube map-based reflections you'll see in the main game.

As explained above, ray tracing can afford a minor level of extra detail, and because you don't need sky-high frame rates for a viewing mode, it's worth leaving this setting on High. Forza Horizon 3 works at a native 3840×2160 resolution on Xbox One X, multiplying the pixels by four compared to the Xbox One's 1920×1080 resolution. This version also retains the 4x MSAA, being one of the few titles that achieves it. Note the improvement in the quality of static shadows, equal to that of the higher quality PC option.Xbox One X also has a higher quality LOD, approaching the PC version in terms of detail of the cars, foliage, and buildings.

Look at the side of the car, where in X reflections are also lost when compared to the PC. Those playing the game on Xbox One X will be interested to learn that the game only offers a quality mode that runs the game in 4K resolution and 30FPS, matching the visuals of the game running on the Series X|S in performance mode. The surprise package for me was Xbox One X - level of detail pop-in and longer loading are blemishes but perhaps it's only because these areas of the game are so dramatically improved on Series hardware.

Graphically, it's a treat, and the Scorpio Engine continues to surprise in its ability to service a 4K display. Judged on its own merits, it's a good version of the game and a worthy sequel. Ray Tracing is only available in the Forza Vista mode, and while it looks and performs great, it would have been impressive to see it in the actual game while racing. However, it makes sense that Turn 10 chose not to implement it as the existing reflections technologies in the game get the job done pretty well. All assets, including the gorgeous car models and environments, are of the highest quality here, and given the current performance of the game, I'm perfectly fine with having ray tracing limited to one mode. I still wish that RT features were enabled in the game's photo mode, which is packed to the brim with features for those with a keen eye for visuals.

Essentially, there are advantages to playing Forza Horizon 5 on Xbox Series consoles that aren't just about graphics or frame rate. Hosting the game on the SSD makes the experience on Xbox Series consoles more streamlined – and it's noticeable right from the start of the experience. The intro is the starting point for Playground, a spectacular preview of the action to come. It's a glorious, seamless, no-load experience on Xbox Series machines, but Xbox One consoles simply can't deliver the data for each new stage in time, leading to second pauses from segment to segment.

It sounds insignificant, but loading delays interrupt the flow and don't make the best impression. While these transitions are indeed instantaneous on new consoles, there is still loading in the game, but it's much faster than previous gen console equivalents – about 3x better in my tests. The game runs at 1080p on Xbox One and 4K on Xbox One X. Both of the last-generation consoles only appear to support 30 FPS. You get 4K at 30 FPS on the Xbox Series X and 1440p at 30 FPS on the Xbox Series S. While a preset is not supported, most important settings are quality of Shader, Reflection, Ambition Texture, and Shadow, respectively.

Most of the other settings have no impact on performance or visuals. Hence, I want to mention that turning Shader Quality to Low automatically turns off SSAO, and setting Environment Texture Quality to Low automatically turns the Environment Geometry Quality down. Since we tried to test each setting, it wasn't always possible. One of the interesting aspects of Forza Horizon 5 is that it supports multisample antibody analysis. Most deferred rendering techniques never work well with MSAA, yet as long as it's supported in Red Dead Redemption 2, support has not fully gone. In all probability, most of the presets use 2x MSAA, but combating jaggies is still very visible and become even more noticeable if you use upscaling.
